according to the online daily mail, venus williams has just been diagnosed with sjogrens. Poor thing can you imagine how difficult it must have been for her recently to try and play top class tennis, the only good thing from our point of view is that the news, if true, will bring auto-immune diseases into the media spotlight.

Hi Eve,
Yes I saw this last night on TV. It seems she has been diagnosed with Sjrogrens disease which is a chronic
ongoing auto immune disease which also causes fatigue and joint pain. This sounds so much what we
Brits would call R.A. Is she being coy ?, or is this what the Americans say to avoid anyone saying "but
you look too young etc!!! Is this what we need to do rather than say we've got a touch of arthur?? Perhaps,
as you say, she will raise the profile of RA as a long term multi systemic disease. Thanks Anne

Hi

Sjorgren's syndrome isn't RA but is an autoimmune disorder known to be a frequent travelling companion. These AI disorders often seem to appear in groups and it is common for those diagnosed with RA to also have other AI diseases in tow; there are over 80 and include MS, Lupus, Crohns, Vasculitis, Scleroderma. Some interesting information about autoimmune disease here!

My son, Ian, completed the BUPA Great North Run on 15th September running for the National Rheumatoid Arthritis Society (NRAS). You can read his story at http://www.justgiving.com/ianlukewilson

My goodness me Lyn, I never realised some of these conditions were related to the auto immune system.

Thanks for the post, very interesting.
